Barquín y Otxoa has established itself as a key player in capillary food transport across the Iberian Peninsula. The Basque family business operates 257 vehicles — the majority under 2.5 years old — delivering last-mile distribution to supermarket and hypermarket chains. Eurowag’s fuel management supports operations outside the company’s primary refueling infrastructure.

The Spanish transport market faces structural challenges: a driver shortage creating upward pressure on labor costs, expensive professional licensing, and limited social perception of driving as a career. Food transport adds complexity through strict health and hygiene regulations, weekend delivery requirements, and temperature-controlled precision.
Managing Director Iñaki Iturrioz: “It’s becoming increasingly difficult to cover routes. Drivers now choose when to work, how to work, and at what price.” The company needed to maximize efficiency through technology while offering stable conditions that retain experienced drivers — 90% of routes allow drivers to sleep at home.
The collaboration with Eurowag began after the 2024 acquisition of a Madrid-based company already on the platform. Barquín y Otxoa expanded usage to cover refueling outside its own Vitoria station — approximately 30,000 liters per month. Iturrioz: “It enables better decision-making when operating outside our usual area — not only because of the direct savings, but also because Eurowag identifies stations with competitive prices and facilitates vehicle-specific expense tracking.”
The Webfleet telematics system is deployed across tractors and semi-trailers for real-time monitoring of fuel consumption, driving hours, driver availability, cargo temperature, and door openings. A recently upgraded ERP includes a driver communication application for digital load orders and real-time delivery note digitization. Barquín y Otxoa is recognized as one of the most technologically advanced mid-sized logistics firms on the Cantabrian coast.
Fleet electrification is not on the short-term roadmap given current route conditions, but the company continuously improves its carbon footprint through vehicle renewal, consumption control technologies, and route optimization.
