Tachograph Forum organized by European Commission, DG MOVE.

During the Tachograph Forum organised by the European Commission’s DG MOVE, participants Malgorzata Pander, Piotr Zolty and Mateusz Wloch discussed the latest and upcoming developments related to the smart tachograph. Key milestones include the requirement for all newly registered vehicles to be equipped with the final version of smart tachograph v2 using OSNMA from 24 December 2025, followed in 2026 by the adoption of new technical specifications, including provisions for recording occasional passenger services and possible enforcement improvements.

From 1 July 2026, the installation and retrofitting of smart tachograph v2 will become mandatory for light commercial vehicles engaged in international transport or cabotage for hire or reward, with technical adaptations introduced to support LCV installation. Member States and workshops were encouraged to promote early retrofitting and awareness of the new rules, while operators were advised to plan ahead and ensure driver training where necessary.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on smart tachograph v2 capabilities to support smarter enforcement, such as over-the-air software updates, remote data downloads and enhanced use of DSRC. In addition, updates were shared on UNECE AETR discussions and the rollout of the eFTI environment, with Member States preparing IT systems to enable enforcers to accept and access digital transport documents by July 2027, following the publication of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2243.
