What is the length of a truck?

In Europe, the length of a truck combination depends on the system type:

  • Truck with a trailer – 16.5 meters,
  • Truck with a tandem – 18.5 meters,
  • Truck with a drawbar – 20 meters.

The length of a TIR semi-trailer is 13.6 meters in the case of a classic semi-trailer or low-loader, and the truck itself is approximately 6 to 7 meters long if it has a single cargo compartment. The front part of the truck’s compartment is part of the vehicle, while the rear part is towed behind it.

What is defined as a truck?

A heavy goods vehicle (TIR) is defined as a truck with a total weight exceeding 12 tonnes, equipped with a trailer or semi-trailer. A semi-trailer partly “rests” on the axle of the tractor unit or fifth wheel coupling, whereas a trailer is firmly attached to the frame and all axles of the towing vehicle.
