What is sustainable logistics?

Sustainable logistics is a supply chain management approach that focuses on minimizing environmental impact while ensuring economic and social responsibility. It strives to balance three key pillars:

  • Economic prosperity – ensuring the efficient and smooth functioning of the supply chain.
  • Environmental protection – reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and waste production.
  • Social responsibility – adhering to ethical standards and providing fair working conditions.

Sustainable, or green, logistics aims to optimize routes and choose more environmentally friendly modes of transport. It uses, for example, intermodal transport (which combines different transport methods), shipment consolidation, or shared cargo space systems. Supporting electromobility, as well as the use of alternative fuels and renewable energy sources, is also essential.

The main advantages of sustainable logistics include significantly lower energy and material consumption, increased attractiveness to customers and investors focused on sustainability, and improved resilience of the supply chain to energy price fluctuations and tightening environmental regulations.

Ecology in logistics is a key element of modern supply chain management strategies, highlighting the importance of green logistics in a global context.
