Prague, 6 May 2026 – From 1 July 2026, the Netherlands will introduce a fundamental change in its toll system for goods vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes. The country has not previously used a blanket toll for freight transport, so the new system represents a significant shift in its approach to financing road infrastructure. The current model will be replaced by an electronic toll based on kilometres travelled, weight category and the vehicle’s emission class. Carriers will now be required to use a certified on-board unit. For Eurowag, the Netherlands is now the fourteenth country where drivers can use the EVA on-board unit.

As a major European logistics hub, home to the port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands is a key transit point for international transport. The introduction of the toll system will therefore affect a wide range of hauliers across Europe.
Unlike car drivers, who have to remember to buy a different motorway toll vignette in various European countries, international hauliers have it easier. Thanks to the EVA on-board unit, they face less administrative burden and can plan their routes more efficiently. The service is designed primarily for international hauliers who regularly operate across European borders. With a single EVA device, there is no need to purchase and manage separate on-board units for each country. All toll data and payments are managed clearly in one place.
The introduction of the new system in the Netherlands also brings new administrative obligations for hauliers, including vehicle registration and ensuring they have a compatible on-board unit. In this respect, that a unified solution can significantly simplify the transition to the new rules.
“Our customers today need maximum efficiency not only on the road but also in their administrative processes. Thanks to the EVA unit and its growing coverage within the EETS, we can offer them significant savings in both time and cost,”
says Ivana Lang, Vice-President for Tolls at Eurowag.

EVA was thoroughly tested before deployment in new countries. Customers are already actively using it in challenging Alpine terrain and confirm its reliability. Obtaining and activating the unit is simple. Eurowag delivers it with countries pre-set and without the need for purchase it. It is simply rented.
Any extensions can be easily activated online, often within a few hours. Existing customers can add new countries themselves via the portal. Furthermore, local teams operate in each country to assist with setup and provide technical support.
The new Dutch system also takes vehicle emission parameters into account to a large extent, which is intended to encourage hauliers to modernise their fleets and reduce their carbon footprint. Toll revenues are to be reinvested into transport infrastructure and sustainable transport solutions.
In addition to tolls, the EVA on-board unit offers other features that can simplify vehicle management. Users have access to location data, can plan routes and set alerts for specific situations. It also includes the FuelGuard feature, which compares the vehicle’s location with the location where the fuel card was used, helping to detect any unauthorised refuelling.
Furthermore, using online tools, dispatchers can plan routes not only based on price but also based on emissions. The system considers the vehicle’s weight and emission class, local rates, and journeys through environmental zones. Users have access to CO₂ emission calculators and can easily compare different options in terms of carbon footprint, which can be particularly advantageous in countries where charges vary according to emission levels.
Eurowag (the trading name of W. A.G. Payment Solutions) is a leading pan-European integrated platform for payments and mobility focused on the commercial road transport sector.
