Switzerland Shuts Down 2G Mobile Network. How Will This Affect Our Customers?

Do your drivers pass through Switzerland? If so, you should be aware of the changes that have taken place this year regarding the use of mobile networks. In this article, you'll learn what this change means for fleet managers.

Switzerland Shuts Down 2G Mobile Network. How Will This Affect Our Customers?

No more 2G networks in Switzerland

Moving forward is inevitable. And that's a hundredfold true for today's technology. Swiss mobile operators have been using the 4th and 5th generation mobile network for quite some time and now they are able to cover almost the entire country. That is why they have decided to entirely switch off their 2G mobile network in Switzerland.

At the beginning of 2023, Sunrise, the last operator that supported the 2G standard, announced its deactivation, as the others have done before. In practice, this means that devices only supporting 2G will no longer be able to use any of Switzerland's mobile networks.

How will this change affect EW Telematics users?

If your vehicles drive through Swiss territory, you can see the consequences related to GPS signal outages in Switzerland. Keep in mind that you may have limited access to the "Live Tracking" function as your vehicles pass through Swiss territory.

However, we do not stop collecting data on your vehicle while you are travelling through Switzerland. And although access to this data may be limited while the vehicle is in Switzerland, all information about driving will be uploaded to EW Telematics as soon as the vehicle picks up the signal again. You will therefore not miss your data in the Logbook, and you can rely 100 % on our Fleet Management system in as usual.
