What is a toll collection unit?

What is a toll collection point?

An on-board unit (OBU) is a device used in electronic toll collection systems. It is typically installed in a vehicle and allows for the automatic payment of tolls without requiring the vehicle to stop or slow down. This makes driving on toll roads more efficient and helps reduce traffic congestion.

How does an on-board unit work?

The OBU operates using wireless communication, typically via RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) or DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communication) technology.

When passing through a toll gantry or toll point, the on-board device communicates with the toll system and automatically transmits the necessary data to calculate the toll.

This data may include:

  • the vehicle’s registration number,
  • vehicle type,
  • or the distance travelled on toll roads.
