What is a GPS tracker?

A GPS tracker (or GPS transmitter) is a device used to track the location of objects—most commonly vehicles, but it can also be used for people, cargo, ships, and more. It makes it easy to check where trucks or drivers are at any given moment and also records their movement history.

How does a GPS tracker work?

A GPS tracker uses a GPS module, which determines the geographical location by communicating with satellites. The accuracy of vehicle GPS tracking varies by device, but in general, the best devices pinpoint locations within tens of centimeters, while most popular models offer accuracy within a few meters.

Some manufacturers offer truck navigation systems specifically for companies with fleets. Using a mobile app, you can easily track the location of each vehicle in the fleet, view mileage, see where the driver refueled, and even monitor vehicle speed.

Simpler devices operate via SMS commands. These GPS trackers contain a SIM card—you can call or send a text message to the number and receive the vehicle’s location in response.

Types of vehicle GPS trackers:

  • Wired GPS trackers are powered directly from the vehicle, so there’s no need to worry about battery life. However, installation is more complex and requires technical know-how.
  • Standalone GPS trackers come in the form of small boxes powered by internal batteries. Thanks to long battery life, they can operate for several months in standby mode.

Advantages of a vehicle GPS tracker:

  • Easy monitoring of vehicle movement
  • Overview of vehicle routes and stops
  • Real-time tracking (with some types of devices)
  • Theft protection
  • Monitoring unauthorized driving
  • Reduced vehicle operating costs
  • Increased driver productivity
