Safety break while driving

What are safety breaks during driving?

A safety break is a period during which the driver is not allowed to drive or perform any other work-related tasks. This time is intended to allow the driver to rest and recover. Mandatory breaks for truck drivers are regulated by Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 on drivers’ hours, breaks, and rest periods, as well as by the AETR Agreement concerning international road transport.

How long is a safety break?

During driving, a safety break is mandatory every 4.5 hours. For truck drivers (vehicles over 3.5 tons), the break must last 45 minutes, which can be split into a 15-minute break followed by a 30-minute break.

For van drivers (vehicles up to 3.5 tons), the break must be at least 30 minutes and can be divided into two 15-minute periods.

Who is required to take driver breaks?

The mandatory driving break applies to all truck drivers, both those driving vehicles over 3.5 tons and smaller vehicles under 3.5 tons. In addition to safety breaks, daily and weekly rest periods must also be observed.
