Who is a truck driver?

A truck driver is a person who operates a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) with a weight of over 12 tons. Their main responsibility is to transport cargo to its destination, ensuring the loading and securing of the goods they are responsible for. It is also essential that the driver understands the specifics of driving a truck and keeps the vehicle in good technical condition.

How to become a truck driver?

To become a truck (TIR) driver, you must meet several legal requirements:

  • Obtain a category B driving license (for passenger cars)
  • Obtain a category C license (for trucks without a trailer)
  • Obtain a category E license (for trailers)
    • A C+E license applies to a combination vehicle (tractor unit + trailer), i.e. a full truck
    • A D+E license applies to buses with trailers

How to become a professional truck driver?

In addition to holding the correct driving licenses, a professional truck driver must obtain a national transport license. Without it, you can only drive a truck for personal use. You must also:

  • Pass a psychological evaluation conducted by a psychologist accredited by the Ministry of Transport
  • Obtain a driver card for the tachograph, which records driving time and other key data
