What is EETS, and what is an EETS OBU?

  • EETS stands for European Electronic Toll Service. It is an initiative from the European Union to create a simpler framework for paying toll in Europe.Exclusive toll discounts for Eurowag customers
  • EETS-certified OBUs can make toll payments in multiple countries. Eurowag is an EETS-certified provider and can help you take advantage of an EETS device.

What are vignettes?

  • A vignette is a charge paid for driving on certain roads throughout Europe. Some countries require a small sticker attached to your windscreen as proof of payment for a vignette, while other countries have an electronic vignette.
  • Eurowag customers can pay for electronic vignettes using their Eurowag fuel cards.

Frequently asked questions

How do toll work in Europe?

Toll in Europe can be collected in different ways, depending on the country and the specific toll road or bridge. Here are some common methods of toll collection in Europe:

  • Toll booths: on some roads, drivers pay the toll at toll booths located at the entrances and exits.
  • Electronic toll collection systems: electronic toll systems are used on many toll roads in Europe that allow drivers to pay tolls without having to stop at toll booths. These systems usually include a small electronic device – OBU (on-board unit), which is attached to the vehicle. When the vehicle passes through the toll plaza, the device is scanned, and the toll is automatically deducted from the account.
  • Vignette: is a type of toll sticker that is required for certain vehicles on the road in some European countries. It can be in paper, electronic or SMS form.
  • GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technology: is a type of electronic toll collection system for tracking and charging vehicles for toll. This technology allows tolls to be collected without the need for physical tollbooths or toll collection infrastructure. The toll payment is also made with on-board unit.
Which vehicles are required to pay toll?

Which vehicles are subject to toll in Europe is depending on the country and the particular road or bridge. In general, however, almost all vehicles using tollroads or bridges in Europe are subject to tolls. This applies to cars, trucks, motorcycles, buses, and other types of vehicles.

In some countries, tolls are calculated based on the size and weight of the vehicle. On certain toll roads, for example, trucks are charged higher than cars. In addition, on some toll roads and bridges, different toll rates may apply to different types of vehicles, such as passenger cars versus commercial vehicles.

Which roads are subject to paying toll?

There are many toll roads, highways, and bridges all over Europe. The specific toll road regulations vary by country, region, and by type of vehicle.

You can check the local regulations and toll road information about each country on the main toll page.

In Europe, there are several toll solutions that are commonly used for toll roads and bridges.

What is EETS?

EETS stands for Electronic European Toll Service, which is a system that allows drivers to pay tolls electronically in multiple European countries using a single OBU (on-board unit). With the EETS system, drivers can reduce the number of OBUs when travelling across Europe and simplify the toll bureaucratic process.

More information about EETS could be found in Eurowag blog section:
